TheGeoPirateCrew Strikes OakCoins Headquarters!

OakCoins located in the heart of Kaysville Utah distributes Geocaching swag! You have to love good swag. They distribute trackable coins and bugs. They also sell Geocache containers that can be disquised really well!

There is a GeoCache right outside of OakCoins headquarters that we of course stopped and grabbed on our way there! You can see the Geocache listing at http://coord.info/GC2MPP4

Check out OakCoins and their awesome swag at http://www.geoswag.com/

Today really made me want to open my own Geocaching store! That would be the life!

Ahoy!

Arrrrg We Be The Geo Pirate Crew!

Geocaching... is one of the greatest activities in all the world! It stands for good with slogans like CITO Cache in Trash out! There is a Geocaching merit badge for the Boy Scouts of America. It gets lazy people up and using technology to do more than just change a channel, but to explore the world around them! I have found many cool places and seen things in cities that I have lived that I never would have known exsisted, had it not been for Geocaching.

If you already know what Geocaching is you can skip this paragraph. If you don't, it is time to learn and join in the hunt! Geocaching is the modern day version of hiding treasure for others to discover. Hence, my family decided we are the Geo Pirates! We feel like we are passing small treasures all over the world while we play the game. So... one person hides a container that others want to find. They then post the GPS coordinates online and anyone can come to find it. When you find it you can either take from the small items that are available and leave something of equal or greater value, or just sign the log book inside and mark that you were there. The cool part... THERE ARE THOUSANDS of Geocaches. I would bet there are a lot of them right around you, right now! When I first looked at the Geocache list there was over 100 of them within 10 miles of my house. This is why this is cool. You can always hunt for new ones, or really old ones that you have never found.

My wife and I started Geocaching November 1, 2009 and have had our off and on moments with it. To date we have only found 120 different Geocaches... which is still considered fairly new. We have only hidden one cache, but have plans to hide more! For Christmas my wife bought me two travel bug tags that we are planning on starting soon.

A travel bug is a marked item that when found you log it online and then pass it along through Geocaches for someone else to pick up and mark and again move it along. Many travel bugs roam the world. Have you ever gotten one of those dollar bills that has the where is George website? You go online and mark the tracker number and it tells you where in the USA that dollar bill has been. That is a travel bug! However, it doesn't use a system of Geocaches, it uses cash registers to travel!

If you need more in depth explanations head to http://www.geocaching.com/ for more information on Geocaching. Then set up your username and search with your zip code or address for Geocaches in your area!

As previously mentioned, you use a GPS to locate these Geocaches. There are some awesome GPS's out there that you can instantly download the Geocache locations right to your device... However, being a poor college attending small family we use a very basic GPS that I input every coordinate by hand. Hey, whatever works for ya right!? For reference I use the Garmin Etrex H. It is small, yellow, and the screen is black and white. It has awesome battery life and is very accurate! So when I talk about my GPSr that is the one I am refering to for now.

On this blog I want to document more fully my adventures with fun caches or challenges we have along the way. I also want to share travel bug info, and all around funny stories!

Thank you for joining us on our adventures! Maybe while blogging we will decide to become members of geocaching.com and get our very first FTF (First to Find)

Sincerely,
